West Indies Women endured a dramatic two-match stretch against Sri Lanka Women in Grenada. After suffering a shocking batting collapse in the opening T20I that was ultimately saved by heavy rain, the hosts returned in the second match hoping for redemption. Instead, Sri Lanka delivered a calm and clinical performance to secure a four-wicket victory.
The first match was reduced to 18 overs per side due to early rain. West Indies elected to bat but struggled from the very beginning. Wickets fell regularly, partnerships never developed, and the scoreboard pressure continued to rise.
The innings ended in disaster as West Indies were bowled out for just 49 runs in 13.3 overs — their second-lowest total in T20 International cricket.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers, especially their spinners, controlled the game completely. They took nine wickets while conceding only 38 runs. The West Indies batters failed to adjust to the variations in pace and flight.
Sri Lanka began the chase confidently, reaching seven without loss in 2.5 overs. However, heavy rain returned and made the outfield unplayable. Officials were forced to abandon the match, giving West Indies an unexpected reprieve.
In the second T20I, Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl. West Indies posted 101 for 9 in their 20 overs. Hayley Matthews top-scored with 28 runs, but no major partnerships were formed.
Malki Madara and Nilakshika Silva claimed three wickets each, keeping the scoring rate under control.
Chasing 102, Sri Lanka displayed calmness under pressure. Chamari Athapaththu led the way with 39 off 26 balls, setting the foundation for victory. Kavisha Dilhari remained unbeaten on 18 to guide her side home in 18.1 overs.
West Indies Women must address their batting inconsistency if they hope to bounce back in the series. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will take confidence from their disciplined bowling and composed chase.
The rain may have delayed Sri Lanka’s dominance in the first match, but the second T20I confirmed their growing strength on the international stage.
