At Least 6 Dead After Tornado Hits Michigan and Central U.S. Storms

At least six people were killed Friday in Michigan and Oklahoma after storms produced powerful tornadoes. Homes were reduced to rubble, roofs were torn off, and debris was left hanging on power lines.

Michigan Tornado Impact

In Union Lake area, Branch County, about two hours from Detroit, there were three deaths and 12 injuries. Three people were sent to the hospital. Cass County also reported one death with severe home and building damage.

At least one tornado has been confirmed near Union City, Michigan, while others may have touched down. A local church was damaged, but its 150-year-old piano survived.

Storm Conditions

The tornado formed due to a combination of warm air from the Gulf of Mexico and cooler air in the Great Lakes. Michigan usually gets 15 tornadoes a year, much fewer than Texas and Kansas.

Official Response

Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response. Residents were warned to seek shelter and expect power outages and closed roads.

Oklahoma Tornado

In Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, a tornado left a 4-mile path of destruction, killing two people in Beggs. Emergency crews worked to clear roads and assess damage.
